Real-time MRI imaging was succesful in capturing dynamic images of the breastfeeding swallow. The imaging modality confirms the dorsal surface of the infant´s tongue elevates the maternal nipple to the hard palate, closing the space around the nipple with no air visible in the oral cavity during sucking and swallowing. Breastmilk was easily visualized, being high intensity on T2 sequences.

The importance of breastfeeding in low-income and middle-income countries is well recognised, but less consensus exists about its importance in high-income countries. In low-income and middle-income countries, only 37% of children younger than 6 months of age are exclusively breastfed. With few exceptions, breastfeeding duration is shorter in high-income countries than in those that are resource-poor. Our meta-analyses indicate protection against child infections and malocclusion, increases in intelligence, and probable reductions in overweight and diabetes. We did not fi nd associations with allergic disorders such as asthma or with blood pressure or cholesterol, and we noted an increase in tooth decay with longer periods of breastfeeding. For nursing women, breastfeeding gave protection against breast cancer and it improved birth spacing, and it might also protect against ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Sweden, for the past decade, has had an enviably low SIDS rate, presumably attributable to high infant supine sleeping rates and low parental smoking rates [for the latter, 5.1% of mothers and 10.8% of fathers in 2010. However, in most high-income countries, while SIDS (ICD-10 R95) rates have declined, there has also been an increase in rates of other sudden and unexpected infant deaths, such as ill-defined deaths (ICD-10 R99) and deaths attributed to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB) (ICD-10 W75).

To investigate African-American parental reasons for pacifier use or non-use, and whether knowledge of the association with decreased SIDS risk changes decisions about pacifier use. We conducted focus groups and individual interviews with mothers. Grounded theory methodology was used. 83 mothers participated; 72.3 % of infants used pacifiers. Reasons for pacifier use included comfort/soothing, safety/SIDS, and preference over digitsucking. Reasons for pacifier non-use included infant refusal, fear of attachment, nipple confusion, and germs.

Pacifier use has been reported to be associated with a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), but most countries around the world, including the United States, have been reluctant to recommend the use of pacifiers because of concerns about possible adverse effects. This meta-analysis was undertaken to quantify and evaluate the protective effect of pacifiers against SIDS and to make a recommendation on the use of pacifiers to prevent SIDS.
